Do you have your HIV self-test? Come to RÉZO to get one!
HIV self-tests, which have been available for a few years in several countries, were approved by Health Canada in November 2020. This is an important new tool in the prevention of HIV, as it allows for more frequent testing, to know one’s status, and to prevent new infections.
These tests allow a person who has had a potential exposure to HIV to take a blood sample and perform the blood test using the tools provided in the kit. If the result is positive, it must be confirmed by a standard screening test at a screening clinic and confirmed by laboratory.
When a self-test is performed, the result is automatic and will be 99% reliable.
Important reminder: respect the window period
It is important to remember that the window period is the time between when a person is exposed to HIV and when the test can detect the virus. Depending on the information provided, the window period is between 3 weeks and 3 months. So, keep in mind that the virus can take up to three months to be detectable. Therefore, it is recommended to retake a test three months after potential exposure. This result will be the most accurate and precise.
RÉZO is there for you!
At RÉZO, we have self-tests that we distribute free of charge in our offices and during our festive and outdoor activities. Also, several establishments in the Village collaborate with us to distribute them to you and your loved ones when you go out… You can also pick them up during our volunteer evenings at 1223 Atateken Street every Wednesday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
To make it easy for you, we have put together a tutorial that shows you all the steps to follow to get a successful result. We explain how the test works and the steps are designed to show you exactly how to perform the manipulations. Moreover, it is also possible to do it on-site with the assistance of a facilitator.
So if you need advice or need to purchase an HIV self-test, come see us at our offices between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
If you would like to speak to someone from our team, you can contact a counsellor at 514-521-7778, extension 226 or 514-730-5757.
